Wooster Idea Competition

Wooster Business Idea Competition allows students to compete for a pool of prize money worth $6,000. It provides an opportunity to share their unique business ideas with the Wooster community and receive assistance in implementing those ideas.

This year's judges are all Wooster alumni who have had successful entrepreneurial careers. The final presentations will be given in an interactive format, giving the judges the opportunity to engage with the contestants.


Develop a business idea in one of three categories:

  • Web-based or App business
  • Product or Service business
  • Social or Non-Profit business

Applications are due by 5 pm on February 13. They will be reviewed by the Launch Club and the Center for Entrepreneurship and all finalists selected by February 16. Those finalists will present their ideas at a live contest event in the Governance Room at the Scott Center starting at 4 pm on February 20, 2015.

Selected students will present their idea in the form of a pitch in front of a panel of judges and an audience. These judges will be College alumni who are now entrepreneurs. The judges will ask questions and interact with the students.

Students are limited strictly to 5 minutes to make their pitch. Additional time will be available for questions.

As part of the pitch, students need to ask for money to help them implement their idea. They can ask for any amount of money up to $1,500. The judges will make the final determination of how much money is awarded to each team.

Each presentation will follow a similar format:

  • Your idea
  • The problem your idea solves
  • The amount of money you want
  • How you will use that money

Each presenter should be prepared to answer any questions about their idea asked by the judges. To prepare for these questions, students should create a business model canvas for their idea. Information about the business model canvas can be obtained at the office of the Director for Entrepreneurship in APEX.

All finalists are required to be at the Governance Room at 4 pm for an initial meeting with the event planners and the judges. The event will last until approximately 7 pm.
